Car Industry Must Take Bold Actions to Meet Climate Targets, Says New Study

A new report backed by electric vehicle companies Polestar and Rivian has found that the automotive industry will miss climate goals by 75% if car manufacturers do not adopt urgent and aggressive measures to deal with the massive carbon footprint of their industry. According to the report, electrification alone will not be enough to close the gap. The industry must make several changes, including putting an end date on fossil fuel car sales, investing in increasing production capabilities for electric cars, creating more renewable energy sources for charging, and adopting more sustainable supply chains.

Climate change has been an essential priority of car makers for the past decade. Customers are becoming more concerned about the environmental impact of their cars, and the recent energy crisis and war in Ukraine have highlighted the necessity to accelerate the shift to greener transportation. Companies are taking up ambitious goals to reduce their carbon footprint, such as Swedish car maker Volvo pledging to sell only electric cars by 2030 and becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040.

Despite the industry’s willingness to transition, they face many issues such as geopolitical and macroeconomic conditions, component shortages, and supply chain issues, making it harder to move towards sustainable energy. Companies like Rivian have battled to keep up with demand, and pressure from market leader Tesla pushed them to lay off 6% of their workforce, and automotive suppliers are struggling to keep up with the extra costs of making their components environmentally friendly.

The auto industry needs to take urgent action if it intends to meet the climate goals set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, limiting the increase in average global temperature to just 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Polestar and Rivian hope that their report will spark initiatives and concerted efforts by car manufacturers worldwide to address the environmental challenges they face. In conclusion, the automotive industry, like every other sector of society, faces a critical responsibility towards preserving the environment for future generations. Bold actions and concerted efforts from industry stakeholders to reduce their carbon footprint are crucial to meet climate targets and limit global warming
