UAE Schools Embrace ChatGPT, The Future of Education

In November 2020, a new technology called ChatGPT was introduced to the world. It sparked curiosity and discussions globally and caused concern among educators about its impact on the educational landscape. ChatGPT, short for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, is a program that can generate text, including essays and coursework. It has made its way into the UAE, with some schools embracing the cutting-edge technology. However, concerns about student honesty and integrity remain, as this technology can also be used for plagiarism.

Banning ChatGPT is not the answer, as humans have always created new technologies that require adaptation. Instead, schools must address students’ use of generative AI and educate parents and teachers on its uses and potential risks. Digital devices have long been a part of the modern education system, and schools must adapt to new technologies if they plan to stay ahead of the curve.

The UAE has long recognized the necessity of embracing new technologies and keeping pace with progress. The country understands that the technology has far-reaching benefits, not just in education but also in transport, space travel, and other specialized areas. The Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications recently spoke at the World Economic Forum, stating that technology is a fundamental part of growth for the future of the country’s economy and industrial sectors.

Educators also have an advantage in embracing new technology. They now have access to a range of tools and apps, such as ZeroGPT, that can detect plagiarism and ensure students complete assignments on their own. While the technology is still new, safeguards and rules around its use will help keep it from being misused.

In conclusion, UAE schools’ embrace of ChatGPT is a step in the right direction towards creating a future-ready population. While there may be challenges associated with its use, schools can help alleviate concerns by educating stakeholders on the technology’s benefits and providing safeguards to ensure its proper use. With the right balance and judicious use, ChatGPT can help drive progress and prepare students for a future that looks vastly different from the past.
