US-based vertical farming company, AeroFarms, has successfully opened its 6,000 square-metre research and development centre in Abu Dhabi after eighteen months of ground-breaking work. The centre, claimed to be the largest in the world, is aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture in arid and desert climates. By advancing indoor vertical farming, which relies on precise environmental control systems, less water and none of the pesticides used in traditional farming, Abu Dhabi could become a major global agricultural producer.
David Rosenberg, AeroFarms’ co-founder and chief executive, states that the company’s ultimate goal is to develop a better and more sustainable way of growing crops. With their technology and expertise, they believe they can have a significant positive impact on the world.
AeroFarms’ foray into Abu Dhabi has come at a crucial time when the UAE is making significant investments into innovative techniques that promote food security and tackle environmental and climate-related issues. The government aims to achieve a 50% reduction in water usage in farming and reach the zero-waste food economy target by 2030.
Whilst the adoption of sustainable agriculture has been slow in the region, AeroFarms’ investment could signal a turning point in food production practices for the UAE. With an estimated 80% of all food in the Emirates still imported, the development of a successful and efficient agricultural industry would positively impact the economy whilst simultaneously addressing issues of food security.
Ultimately, the use of innovative agricultural methods, such as vertical farming, presents an opportunity for Abu Dhabi to position itself as a global hub for sustainable farming techniques. It remains to be seen how fast this technology will be adopted, but AeroFarms and other companies investing in sustainable agriculture suggest that the trend is moving in the right direction. These investments will bring opportunities to the UAE and its residents, with the potential for new jobs and a sustainable agricultural industry.
